Us, the most passing of all

And these things that live only in passing, solo exhibition at Atelier Maison, Richelieu, France  August 2023

The exhibition title references Rainer Maria Rilke’s Ninth Duino Elegy.

The charcoal drawings that make up ‘Us, the most passing of all’ reflect on our relationship with the road. Once seen as a symbol of freedom and progress and now as we contemplate our destruction of the planet it is viewed from a place of guilt; as dystopian, greedy and a privilege for those able to benefit from that freedom. I wanted to look at the architecture of these places, in this case mainly the A28 and A16 in northern France. However a road synonymous with roads throughout the developed world. The utilitarian form of the bridge and the tunnel becomes monumental in its beauty echoing how we can both love and hate what we have achieved; what we have built. Scents of Wanderlust, the road trip and a freedom to roam, cling to the robust grandiosity of these modern day megaliths.
