Shave at Nettlecombe
1997
Part of Shave Artists residency
Nettlecombe Estate is situated in a wooded Somerset valley.
I studied the 18C water system of streams and sluices used to move water around the estate, focusing on a canalised stream that leads to a well overflow.
I found an entrance to a tunnel hidden amongst undergrowth, I could fit just inside, slipped down into it, cool after the July heat, red oxide mud, the tunnel was vaulted brick, the floor big stone pavers, beautiful in its construction. I cleaned it, making it visible again, I wanted others to appreciate its simplicity and beauty. I placed a found mirror in the tunnel so people could see up its length, as there was no electricity I placed candles beside a bowl of water, a goldfish inside the bowl brought life and a glistening treasure.
