One Takeaway Container of Thames Foreshore, Sorted
2021
For 6 months in 2021 I had a studio beside the Thames on the South Bank. It is an area I know well and I wanted to return to looking at the river and the city. I have been thinking for some time about the urban being like a frosting on a landscape, that a disintegrated city becomes dust and matter, the entropic cycle. Matter washes up on the foreshore, the city ground down. Softened brick, glass, plastic, concrete. I filled a plastic takeaway container with foreshore and then picked it over, sieved and filtered it. The sorted matter was displayed as part of the exhibition ‘The Elementals’ in glass Petri dishes within a sand circle. This work is a companion piece to Fragments of the Thames Foreshore Expanded (see Topographic).
