The sly earth’s secret purpose
And these things that live only in passing, solo exhibition at Atelier Maison, Richelieu, France August 2023
The exhibition title references Rainer Maria Rilke’s Ninth Duino Elegy.
The sly earth’s secret purpose’ is an installation inspired by a collection of French wallpaper designs. I am intrigued as to how the history of the fabric of a home can be seen through the layering of papers illustrating differing inhabitants' desires for comfortable domesticity. The need for a solid dwelling to keep ‘nature’ at bay juxtaposed with our desire to fill our rooms with the beauty of the natural world through the papers' tumbling arabesques and exotic floral creations. Tamed and manageable, the expansiveness of outdoors brought inside to the internal world. I sought to set the floral free again out of the restriction of walls and the rigidity of domestic necessity.
